Interview with Recruitment Consultant, Katie Marnell
Developing Talent Through Our Training Academy
With the fantastic growth of First Recruitment Group in 2018, it was inevitable that we worked to expand our internal team.
A big part of that growth develops through our Training Academy, headed by Sharon Kenyon who has over 10 years recruitment and management experience.
We caught up with one of our Recruitment Consultants, Katie Marnell, who successfully graduated from our Training Academy in 2018 and has gone on to develop a career with the company. Take a look at what she had to say below.
Tell us about your experience in the Training Academy
I didn’t have recruitment experience prior to starting at First, yet I was given the chance to become a Trainee. I was told they were looking for the right attitude and a willingness to learn. I have since been really impressed by the amount of training and structure that you get when moving through the training scheme. It gives you a good basis for the industry and teaches you the skills you need to move to the next level. It’s also a really positive working environment with the support and encouragement given by Sharon, the Training Manager.
During my time in the Training Academy I was given on the job training, which has proven to be really valuable. Even now that I have moved into a new, more sector, specific team I feel like I can always ask for help which is really good.
What is the best thing about working for First?
I think the best thing about working for First is the fact that there is a really friendly and sociable environment, from managers through to trainees. Having the freedom to work flexibly is a big plus too.
What makes you feel valued at First?
When you work hard and achieve great results, the company is not afraid to provide praise, making you feel valued. Early on in my time at First, I was proud to make 3 placements in one week. This was recognised by management who offered me the opportunity to take an early finish at the end of the week. It is this recognition of achievements and flexibility that not only makes me feel valued, but in turn makes me value the company.
How have First influenced your long term career goals?
First have given me the opportunity to start and develop my career in Recruitment. I feel confident that there are opportunities for me to progress in the future.
Part of this is how they also encourage and provide further training through the REC approved Recruitment Juice further training programme. I like that you are also given a mentor who is more experienced to help give advice. It make you feel they are invested in seeing you succeed.
