Marketing Career
This page is to help people assess if a marketing career is right for them, showing the progression that is available and the possible salaries you could expect.
Would marketing suit me?
To enter the marketing industry you normally need to have a degree in marketing, business or media, although some may just require a Certificate in Marketing. Entry level jobs include a Marketing Assistant or Marketing Executive. You could also go in to a specialism such as research, digital or events, which come under the umbrella of marketing.
The type of person that would suit these roles should:
- Be confident
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Be organised
- Have good creative skills
- Work well under pressure
- Have a good knowledge of various marketing techniques
What tasks are involved?
The great thing about a marketing role is that it is varied. A Marketing Executive, for example, would be involved in developing and promoting campaigns for a product or service. Most of the role is implementation involving digital marketing, copywriting, events and PR. You could be involved in marketing research, email campaigns, basic design and presentation, communication of plans and social media. Each day is different and most tasks are varied. When in a more senior position you could be involved in strategies, reporting and budgets too.
Salary estimates and progression
A starting role in marketing is about £18,000 rising to £25,000 for an Executive with experience. A marketing career could lead to a role as a Marketing Manager (up to £40,000) and eventually a Marketing Director with salaries up to £60,000 depending on location.
