A Civil Engineering role could involve the planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructures. A Civil Engineer could work in the sectors of Water, Rail, Highways, Building Construction and even Maritime. Some of the central responsibilities are:
- Working with a client to plan a project
- Reviewing that plan through analysis and testing, using surveying tools
- Creating of blueprints
- Cost analysis
- Management of the project from start to finish
- Ensuring legal compliance as well as health and safety standards
Progression and salary
You will need an engineering or master’s degree to become a Civil Engineer. A starting salary for this kind of role is around £20,000 rising to £35,000 + car allowances with experience. You could then go on to become a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers who average a salary of around £49,000. An ICE fellow can even rise to a salary of over £80,000.
