How to stay calm and focused when looking for a job

Looking for a new job can be a daunting task. You may have to be patient and wait a bit longer than you originally wanted to in order to get your dream role, but a little patience can make it all worthwhile. That’s why we’ve put together some top tips to help you stay calm and focused as you battle the jobs market.

Focus on your vision
Spend your free time figuring out exactly what it is you want to do and be. Ask yourself and analyse what could’ve been different in your current/last role, what kind of business you want to work for in the future and what you want to achieve in the next 5-10 years. This will give you a clear vision of what you want to be and the path you want to go down. The last thing you want is to apply for a job you aren’t really interested in and then end up in the same position you are in now in a few years’ time because you don’t enjoy what you’re doing.

Don’t glue yourself to jobsites

Limit the time you spend on jobsites, checking once a day for a set amount of time. This stops you spending hours scrolling through jobs for hours on end, which can be demoralising. Jobsites aren’t the only place to find opportunities and you don’t want this to take over your life. Use your connections, look on company websites and of course work with recruitment agencies – this could save you a lot of time and effort if they know you are looking and bring the job to you.

Keep up to date with industry news
Whether you are currently employed or unemployed at the moment, it’s important to keep up to date on industry news, who is expanding and what companies are doing in your market. Make sure you’re in the know of all the latest happenings, locally and globally as this could prove useful when you do land a job interview, showing your passion for your job.

Network/ stay active
Another very important thing to do when you’re on the hunt for your dream job is to network. LinkedIn is an especially useful tool to use as it’s full of industry professionals and recruiters waiting for candidates just like you to snap up opportunities. Connect with people, and stay active. Staying active is especially important due to the fact that the more you like, comment on social media, the more people are likely to see your profile. It only take one person to notice you and think “they’re quite interesting, let’s interview them”.

Stay positive
Our final piece of advice is to stay positive. Yes, it could be a long process, but don’t let it deter you from finding the perfect role. Your attitude is everything when it comes to your career, so if you keep your head held high and believe that you have the power to succeed, then you’re destined to do well. What’ve you got to lose?

We hope these tips help you stay calm and focused in your search for success. Why not use our job search tool to find your next role today?
