Contract: Inside IR35

Location: Cumbria

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Health Physics Monitor to join our team for a significant remediation project in Cumbria. In this role, you will provide essential radiological monitoring services, ensuring the safety of people, equipment, and the environment from the effects of ionising radiation and contamination. This position involves monitoring various aspects of the project, including equipment, facilities, and excavation work areas.

Ideal candidates will have an NVQ Level 2 in Radiation Protection, previous experience as a Health Physics Monitor, and strong communication skills. The ability to obtain SC level security clearance is also required. Join us and contribute to a safer, cleaner environment through meticulous radiation protection practices.

Shift Patterns:

  • Shift 1:
    • Monday: 11:00 AM - 6:30 PM
    • Tuesday to Thursday: 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM
    • Friday: 7:30 AM - 12:00 PM (1 hour lunch break)
  • Shift 2:
    • Monday to Thursday: 12:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Some variations in start and finish times may be agreed upon with the contractor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Radiation Monitoring:
    • Monitor surface and airborne contamination using hand-held and portable instruments.
    • Measure radiation dose rates with hand-held, installed, and portable detectors.
    • Conduct personal contamination checks and provide responses as needed.
    • Segregate and consign waste and monitor packages for transportation.
  • Instrumentation Testing:
    • Perform functional tests on radiological protection instruments using calibrated radioactive sealed sources.
  • ALARP Principles:
    • Respond to radiological condition changes using the As Low as Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principles.
  • Record Keeping:
    • Document radiation protection monitoring and survey results in accordance with procedures.
  • Emergency Response:
    • Participate in emergency responses to monitor and manage environmental radiological releases.
  • Communication:
    • Communicate radiological protection information effectively to ensure accurate and timely information exchange.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Fundamental principles and implications of different types of radiation, sources, hazards, and radiological control measures.
  • Purpose and limitations of various radiation protection monitoring instruments.
  • Safety and security expectations for nuclear licensed sites and CDM sites.
  • Application of safety management systems such as Method Statements and Risk Assessments.
  • Relevant legal requirements and company policies regarding ionising radiation control and other related legislation.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in using radiological protection instruments for various monitoring tasks.
  • Capable of performing accurate and reliable numerical calculations to assess radiological significance.
  • Respond effectively to changes in radiological conditions.
  • Document and communicate monitoring results accurately.
  • Participate in and respond to emergencies to ensure the safety of personnel, plant, and environment.

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualification: NVQ Level 2 in Radiation Protection.
  • Experience: Previous experience as a Health Physics Monitor.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Security Clearance: Ability to obtain SC level security clearance, including identity,
