Senior Mechanical Engineer
Remote (travel to site 1-2 days per month)
Contract
The purpose of the role is to manage the delivery of mechanical engineering work packages to the required scope, quality, schedule and cost.
Responsible for managing the technical aspects of the mechanical engineering packages from identification of the need, through to handover.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer post operates as part of the Strategic Infrastructure Business Unit.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Lead and manage one or more technical design packages agreeing project related objectives, managing designer performance and making appropriate technical management responses. Provide Subject Matter Expert advice as per discipline.
- Ensure that the design documentation covers the scope of operations required by the Project Manager and is produced to agreed standards, schedule, and budget.
- Plan for effective project implementation, identifying key factors and leading the project’s technical planning process.
- Ensure that the processes and activities being managed are appropriately documented with appropriate records maintained and configuration and quality controls applied.
- Ensure that staff and contractors are familiar with the hazards and risks associated with the work undertaken by the delegated engineering team through effective management and communication of the Risk Assessment
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
- A degree in an appropriate engineering discipline.
- Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council or working towards Chartership.
- Nuclear Introductory Course or equivalent nuclear and/or marine system knowledge preferred.
- Alternatively, experience in other safety critical plant/process design would be considered.
- Design of mechanical and nuclear process / plant systems e.g. fresh water, demineralised water, radioactive effluent processing etc.
- Experience of the Functional Safety implications of process / plant design, and design of safety systems.
- Experience of substantiation of process equipment for justification of Safety Functions (Nuclear preferred).
- Experience in producing and checking a wide range of engineering reports and supporting more junior engineers in these activities.
- Able to effectively communicate and represent the mechanical discipline in, multi-level, stakeholder reviews.
Experience
- The post holder must be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills required in the technical management of complex design development throughout the design lifecycle.
- Experience working across multi-disciplinary project teams to the successful completion of projects within a tight schedule.
- Provide expert advice to the other mechanical engineers and various disciplines to enable them to develop the design.
- Able to suggest and guide the creation of appropriate hand calculations to verify that concepts / proposals meet design requirements.
- Able to guide other engineers in the selection of pumps and piping systems.
- Able to produce and check Process Sequence / P&ID drawings.
- Able to produce and check fabrication drawings to recognised standards, i.e. BS8888.
- Able to produce and check plant Process Descriptions.
- Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to discipline, post and project requirements.
- Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience.
- Sound understanding of Company and departmental procedures relating to Design, Health & Safety and Quality requirements, and ability to manage projects in accordance with these procedures.
- Experience of the design support to construction, operation, refit/repair of conventional and nuclear submarines and/or facilities. OR Experience of the design and support of Hydrocarbon/Chemical process/plant systems.
- Knowledge of seismic analysis for mechanical process equipment beneficial
