Five interesting facts about the food industry
- Did you know that there are over 6300 food & drink manufacturing businesses in the UK and that the industry contributed £21.5 billion gross value to the economy.
- It is the largest manufacturing sector in the UK, accounting for over 15.7% of total manufacturing turnover, employing over 400,000 people, with employees earning, on average, 5% more than the national average.
- Almost £13 billion is exported each year and 78% of this goes to the EU.
- The Food Industry invests more than £1.3 billion on New Product Development, launching around 8,000 new products each year.
- At any given time there are around 16,000 job vacancies in the food industry and it is estimated that by 2020 we will need 170,000 additional people to work in the sector.
