Reflecting on parenting, work and mental health

29 Jan 2025

As someone passionate about people and culture at First Recruitment Group - and as a parent of two young children - I often reflect on the delicate balance between work, personal responsibilities and mental health. Supporting employees in their professional lives is a key part of my role, but navigating my own challenges has also taught me invaluable lessons about prioritising mental health in my personal life.

Setting boundaries at work

As someone who thrives on helping others, I’ve learned how easy it is to overextend myself. Setting boundaries has been crucial - not just for my own wellbeing, but for the benefit of those who depend on me, both at work and at home. It’s not always easy, but it’s essential.

Practising self-compassion

One of the hardest lessons I have had to learn is that it’s okay to make mistakes (just as I tell my children!) and not be perfect. Like many parents, I’ve had moments where I’ve felt like I’m falling short - missing a school event due to traffic, or being too tired to give my full attention at the end of a long day. On those tough days, I remind myself of a simple truth - being present with love and intention matters far more than getting everything right. Mistakes are part of life, and they’re opportunities to show ourselves the same kindness we’d offer a friend - or our children.

Leaning on others

I’ve also realised how vital it is to lean on others. Whether it’s family, friends or colleagues, having a support network is invaluable. In HR, we encourage employees to rely on their work buddies or teammates, and I’ve embraced the same principle in my personal life. Asking for help when needed isn’t a weakness; it’s a strength that makes a world of difference.

Creating a mental health-friendly workplace

At First Recruitment Group, we understand the importance of supporting all employees, including parents and those with caring responsibilities, in the workplace. It’s something I’m incredibly passionate about and we’ve worked hard to create a culture that’s both understanding and flexible for all.

Here are just a couple of initiatives we’ve implemented over the years:

  • Agile Working: Flexibility is key. Agile working allows employees to adjust their schedules to fit around school runs or childcare needs and/or caring responsibilities, ensuring they can meet their family responsibilities without compromising their careers.
  • Mental Health Support: We take mental health seriously. From our team of Mental Health First Aiders to our Employee Assistance Programme, we’re committed to ensuring our employees have the resources they need to thrive.

Final thoughts

Balancing a career with the demands of life, whether as a parent, carer or someone navigating unique personal circumstance, can be challenging. But with the right mindset and a strong support system, it’s absolutely possible to thrive in all areas.

Mental health isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity - for ourselves, for those we care for and for the workplace as a whole.

At First Recruitment Group, we’re committed to maintaining a culture that supports all employees. Whether through flexible working arrangements, mental health resources or simply creating an environment of understanding, we recognise the invaluable contributions our team members bring - not just to the business, but to the people who matter most in their lives.
