Types of Oil & Gas engineering

  • Petroleum Engineer: The general purpose of a Petroleum Engineer is to maximise the hydrocarbon recovered from the ground, whilst ensuring the effect on the environment and cost is minimised. A Petroleum Engineer could be involved in research, evaluation, development or production working offshore or in an office environment. Their role could also include design, helping to locate Oil & Gas reserves, extraction or processing.
  • Reservoir Engineer: The purpose of a Reservoir Engineer is to maximise the value and efficiency of an Oil & Gas project using evaluation and extraction techniques. They use their skills to predict crude oil flow beneath the earth, analysing production to maximise efforts. Typically a Reservoir Engineer will hold a physics, chemistry or mathematics degree.
  • Drilling Engineer: A Drilling Engineer will implement drilling programmes and design wells whilst managing teams both on and offshore. They will focus on analysing performance, costs and budgets to ensure everything happens as planned. Typically a Drilling Engineer will hold an engineering or science degree.
  • Production Engineer: This role focuses on overseeing the design of equipment and its application during the Oil & Gas process. They monitor reservoir flows, wellbores and design systems so that materials can be effectively extracted. A Production Engineer would come from a scientific degree background.
